Burial
Untrue

Released: 05/11/07

This record is described by Burial’s label as “...weird soul music, hypersoul, lovingly processing spectral female voices into vaporised R&B and smudged 2step garage.”

What it doesn’t tell you is that Burial’s sophomore album may well be the album of the year. That’s quite the claim I hear you say... and believe me, this title isn’t given lightly... but this ‘anonymous’ dubstep artist from the UK has just delivered an absolute gem.

Untrue is thirteen tracks of edgy London beats, layered with wave upon wave of atmospheric synths. This approach is coupled with Burial’s discovery of female vocal samples – and how to use these samples to attain an even greater emotive depth within his craft.

The highlights are too numerous to mention, however opener ‘ Archangel’ cannot be passed without praise. The beats are familiar, but it features a far more conventional song structure than on other Burial tracks. It also works as the perfect segue into the rest of the album. From there, whether it is the otherworldly sounds of ‘Near Dark’, or the beauty of ‘In McDonalds’, you can’t help but be drawn into Burials hypnotic world.

The final word should be left to the man himself. In one of his few interviews, he talks of past masters and the art of escapism that he has tried to emulate with Untrue;

“...they worked hard to take you out of where you were, make you get lost, steal away. They weren't just serving up an element that you could instantly get into. They would put an atmosphere in the room that wasn't there before, or maybe had never been there....
