This is one of those “artistic expression" type albums. You know, where the band moves away from a successful formula because “everyone else is now doing our style of music”.
So what does this mean for Goldfrapp?
Let me sum it up for you in four adjectives: psychedelic, at times acoustic, stripped back, pop.
Yes, the electro-synth tunes are put on the backburner for Goldfrapp’s fourth studio album Seventh Tree. These ten tunes were written and recorded throughout 2007, after being inspired by an acoustic radio show they performed on in 2006. What quickly becomes obvious is the down-tempo nature of the tracks. At times it seems like the band is striving for an ambient, almost eery, vibe. A far cry from the dance halls of Europe.
The first two singles off the album, 'A&E' and 'Happiness', are the best examples of this new found sound. Give them a try and if you enjoy, delve a bit deeper.
Personally, I say good on them for trying something new – it isn’t going to blow your mind, but it might be quite nice background music when you have that cool couple round for a dinner party.
