The Gutter Twins is a musical meeting of the minds between two stalwarts of 90’s alt-rock. Both front-men in their own right, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) and Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) have been collaborating since 2000, but we’ve had to wait until now for them to make it official – and after listening to their debut album Saturnalia, let’s hope these twins stay together.

The music is a little bit like turning back the clock, dare I say it, but back to the glory days of grunge. However there are just enough twists and turns along the way to modernise the sound and bring it into the here and now. This is best exemplified by the electronica approach on ‘Each to Each’, a rock song layered on top of an urgent electronic beat.

The true highlights are preserved for the dense industrial arrangements that interplay perfectly with The Gutter Twins dark lyrics. ‘The Stations’ and ‘Idle Hands” are prime examples, while ‘God’s Children’ has the sort of soaring dual chorus that shows the immense talent that these two possess.

Mention must also go to the different terrains that Lanegan and Dulli’s vocals inhabit – one strident and earnest, the other gravelly and sombre. Together, they eke every last drop of emotion from a track, simply by recognising how their individual strengths work best together.
