It has been four years since the gold-selling Squire for Hire first graced our ears... oh how time flies. Since then Nathan Haines has had his fingers in many musical pies, but a new album from New Zealand’s forefront Jazz/Electronica exponent was long overdue.
With Right Now Haines delivers eleven tracks of summery goodness, effortlessly moving from groove laden tunes to chill out gems.
It goes without saying that Haines playing is exemplary, however the making of this album is in the individual ingredients that he has brought together – from guest vocalists to session musicians to trusted producers.
But for mine, it is the vocalists that stand out. Marlena Shaw and Vanessa Freeman start the album off in fine style, their vocals blending seamlessly into each funk laden track. British rapper Ty is a welcome addition on ‘Pick It Up’, giving a fresh twist to a familiar groove. However it is hats off to Tama Waipara, he is outstanding, particularly on ‘Home’, a definite album highlight.
This album represents unmistakably familiar territory for Haines, however you can’t help but love the feeling that it exudes.
