Personally, I’m going to give The Teenagers the benefit of the doubt. Rather than being a bunch of average musicians with a penchant for rude lyrics, I think they are actually rather smart.
Firstly put it on as background music and you’ll hear a dozen tracks of harmless synth-based French indie pop - easy melodies making for a foot tapping feast.
Turn the volume up a notch and now you are offending the conservative classes, hell, ‘Homecoming’ will have them walking out of the room. These are lyrics that saunter up to you and slap you full in the face. The spoken word delivery in a French accent just makes it all the more effective.
Now crank it right up and make the music a centrepiece that you can pay full attention to. Yes, it is a bit crass, but it would actually appear they are making a series of cutting statements about the modern world – in particular, America, celebrities and growing up. Who would have thought?
I’m going to leave the last words to the band. Prophetic or not, it’s probably best I let you decide....as they sing on ‘III’,
“I don't know anything
I don't know anything
I don't know anything
I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't know
I don't, I don't, I don't know...
Anything “
