This is one of those albums that on first listen you just don’t get.

This is also one of those albums that on second listen you just don’t get.

But then you begin to click. For me it happened while listening to the 12min+ ‘Bro’s’. Slowly the Beach Boys type vocals, chimes, acoustic strummings, electronic loops and percussive beats all melded together into an almost hypnotic form. This is music to escape the day with, it’s too unpredictable for anything else.

Person Pitch is the third solo album from Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox), the singer and drummer from the experimental New York indie group, ‘Animal Collective’. Generally referred to as an indie rock / electronica pioneer, Panda Bear’s latest solo outing continues to explore new musical landscapes – but never has he made tunes so transcendental and euphoric. While there are multiple layers to each track (which can be overwhelming), this time the different facets don’t get in the way of the aural experience, and the experience is what this record is all about.

The two tracks that make up the heart of the album are it’s strongest, ‘Bro’s’ and ‘I’m Not’. The latter is simply sublime, floating along on a wave of synths and vocal loops, always building to its’ plaintive cry. Both of these songs epitomise the Panda Bear style – give them a try first and if you like them, it’s definitely worth delving into the remainder.

This isn’t an album for everyone, that is obvious from the samples included (ranging from a car assembly line to the NY subway), as well as the fact that its’ 7 songs span a long 45 minutes - but hey, sometimes the greatest risks carry the greatest rewards.
