Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, follows up 2006’s The Greatest with a collection of cover songs from some of her favourite vocalists.

The tracks chosen for Jukebox definitely come from an impressive array of music royalty - from Frank Sinatra, James Brown and Bob Dylan, to Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. This would be a daunting challenge for most, yet Cat Power handles it with aplomb. Her stripped back interpretations of these songs play to her key strength... that soul-filled voice.

The results are at times surprising, ‘New York’ is barely recognisable from the version which ol’ blue eyes’ made famous, while ‘I believe in you’ is presented in such a convincing fashion that you almost forget that B. Dylan wrote it.

So yes.... in how it reinterprets the past, this album is a triumph. However it keeps striking me that the two best tracks on this record are 'Metal Heart' and 'Song to Bobby' and guess who wrote those.... Cat Power. Let’s hope an original album isn’t too far away.
