The godfathers of Australasian Dub are back with their sixth studio album Heal Me.
This is Salmonella Dub's first full release since 2003’s One Drop East and you could be forgiven for thinking that they haven’t been up to much in the interim – their local profile definitely hasn’t been on the high side. But in actuality, over this period they’ve played in the region of 300 shows, across ten countries.
It wasn’t until late 2006, early 2007 that they freed up some time and hit the studio.
So what has the band delivered with Heal Me? Let’s just say it isn’t going to alienate any existing fans, and with an increased vocal focus, it might just appeal to some new ones.
First up is current single ‘Watching it Rain’, and you couldn’t ask for a better re-introduction – it’s like opening the door to an old friend. Smooth vocals, a catchy chorus and great horns interplay perfectly.
Similar ingredients are in the mix on third track ‘Love Sunshine & Happiness’ – the only noticeable difference between these two single releases is the more overt reggae flavour on ‘Love’ . But hey, strength in consistency right?
I’d be remiss to not mention the title track. A funk filled summer groove that’ll be an absolute treat live.
All in all, this is another great offering from one of New Zealand’s longest standing, most reliable acts.
Enjoy people, summer has come early.
