Get Awkward is the sophomore full-length album from Nashville foursome Be Your Own Pet – and it is pretty obvious from the start that their approach hasn’t changed much since their 2006 debut.
This is 15 tracks of fast and furious punk pop, clocking in at a tight 2½ minutes per track.
However while the songs are brief, they encapsulate a series of well thought out ideas. And in the best traditions of punk, they lace each track with hooks and melodies ranging from the simple to the complex.
Jemina Pearl’s vocals remain the band’s key differentiator – but the shifts in mood and emotion between songs is also a highlight.
Lastly, kudos to Jemina for doing the best Skin impersonation in years on ‘Super Soaked’. Skunk Anansie would’ve been proud.
