This is new... a band getting plaudits for their CD cover art before their music. Well, I suppose the cover is illustrated by Craig Thompson, the acclaimed graphic novelist of Blankets fame – and with eight possible visual permutations, four when the CD is in the case, and four when it's in the player, this really is the CD case that just keeps on giving.

But it’s supposed to be about the music right?

Luckily, that particular facet measures up pretty favourably too.

Menomena are an ‘experimental’ rock band from Portland and Friend and Foe is their third studio album. They are known for their unorthodox approach to forming tracks – using a computer programme called ‘Deeler’, which sets an initial tempo, onto which they lay an improvised riff and then repeat the process for each instrument. The result is a multitude of sounds coming together on each track – we’re talking anything from pianos, guitars and drums, through to blips, sax, bells and a well placed pipe organ.

First up is album opener, ‘Muscle’n Flo’. Baring an uncanny resemblance to ‘TV on the Radio’, it rocks along with its’ quiet/loud approach providing a seamless treat. This track is the perfect introduction to Menomena, sporting their trademark approach to song structure, while delivering some great vocal melodies.

But please don’t go getting carried away just yet, because it’s the lead single ‘Wet and Rusting’ where the band really hits their stride. This is a fragile, introspective song, featuring some of their most heartfelt lyrics – it’s backed with delicate pianos and acoustic guitar, before a swelling drum track interplays with two duelling vocals to finish off – truly great stuff.

Ah hell, now I’m getting gushy.

You know, the best thing about this album is the way it peels back a new layer each time you listen (the best albums always do) so go buy it, pop the cd into your stereo and nail the case to your lounge room wall. Music and art – bargain.
