Firstly, let me introduce you to New Young Pony Club.
They are a London band who has been rattling around for a while now. Their debut album, Fantastic Playroom, has just seen the light of day and they have secured a 2007 Mercury Prize nomination following its release. They also have the dubious honour of being labelled “new rave” – a tag line for bands that display a love for 80’s synths and “post-punk” music – it means modern... yet old-school... apparently.
Now let me describe the album.
Imagine a band with an uncanny ability to lay down an early hook, start a song well, get you really interested and then.... well, then nothing. There is no knockout punch, hell, there’s hardly a left jab.
It’s like having a tequila shot without the lemon.
It’s like James Bond movies without Sean Connery.
It’s like Milli Vanilli not blaming it on the rain.
I could go on.
Instead, download ‘Get Lucky’, ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘The Bomb’, the three album highlights, then use the rest of the money to buy yourself a treat. You’ll thank me one day.
