On his 2006 album Edin Paul McLaney started a transformation – he began to move away from the more mainstream sound of former band Gramsci, towards a set of songs that housed far deeper personal reflections.
Now the transition appears to be complete and with new record Diamond Side McLaney appears to be an artist who is finally at ease with himself.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles over two live sessions in August 2007, with the help of producer/engineer Michael Frondelli (Crowded House, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) – the resulting twelve songs are stripped back masterpieces, showcasing McLaney’s sublime vocals and acoustic guitar.
The result is an unapologetic collection of love songs – citing influences from John Martyn to Bob Dylan to Nick Drake, these tracks simply float along, blending into each other and becoming something that is so much more than the sum of their parts.
Grab yourself a copy and make sure to catch McLaney over the coming months at his intimate live shows.
Oh and if you like this (which I’m sure you will), I fully recommend trying McLaney’s earlier solo work, 2003’s The Shadow Of Birds... – it is an oft overlooked, but stunning record.
