The Temper Trap are the best thing, musically, to come out of Melbourne in quite some time. On Conditions, their debut album, they deliver an intoxicating mish mash of sounds – they range from Radiohead rock to Coldplay pop, while managing to explore quite a few side streets along the way.
I don’t know what it was, but when I put this record on, I didn’t stop listening to it until the end. Something about this album, maybe its mix of earnestness and ambition, makes it a really compelling play. Noted for its atmospheric sound, grand guitars and pulsating rhythms, the recipe is nothing that is going to shake the world up - but it works, so don’t go getting on that
high horse.
Try out the lead single as your first sample. ‘Sweet Disposition’ is all of the above wrapped into one track. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, I recommend moving on. If it does tickle your fancy (no that’s not a euphemism), then get it, play it – it’s perfect for a Sunday afternoon that needs to gear you up for a big week.
