Blue on Blue is the new EP from Auckland band Cut Off Your Hands. Recorded in London, it is four tracks of polished ‘power-pop’. Not surprisingly, it has some undeniable brit-pop leanings.
This sound marks a bit of a change in direction for the band – the songs having a preoccupation with pop melody, as opposed to the addictive frenzy seen on their debut release.
Some of the credit for this new sound must be down to the influence of former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler (who helped out on production duties), but it still smacks of a band who haven’t quite nailed their essence just yet.
And so the music....‘Still Fond’ definitely kicks things off in style, with its' jangly guitars and 60’s style backing vocals. However it is ‘Closed Eyes’ that really makes this EP worth its' cover price. This is infectious and edgy stuff, with the vocals and guitars waging a great battle, until the bridge delivers us into the tracks fitting climax. This song takes the best elements from their two EP’s and blends them together perfectly.
It is ‘Closed Eyes’ that hopefully gives us a nod to what the forthcoming album will be like – and if so, it’ll be an absolute treat.
